Autumn Harvest 2010
08 December, 2010

The harvest was brought in successfully just before poor weather set in and all our grain has now been sold at prices considerably higher than last year’s, reflecting the upward trend in world markets.
Our grain yields were satisfactory (bearing in mind our organic status), barley coming in at 1.4 tonnes an acre and oats, which is always our best performer, yielding 1.7 tonnes an acre. We rather regretted a decision made early on in the year, when one of our oats fields was looking rather poorly, to take whole crop silage from the field!
The Spring bean crop was disappointing, yielding barely three quarters of a tonne per acre. We gather that this was a fairly common occurrence throughout the UK this year.
Silaging was good so we have plenty of fodder to keep the livestock happy over the winter.
